Final Destination

All wastes in Lisbon are handed over to VALORSUL for valorisation and final destination. This entity is responsible for managing the Multi-municipality System for Valorising and Treating Solid Urban Wastes produced by the municipalities which form part of it (Lisbon, Amadora, Loures and Vila Franca de Xira).

This inter-municipal system includes building diverse structuring equipment for the treatment and final destination of wastes:

SANITARY LANDFILL

Situated: Mato da Cruz - Vila Franca de Xira Municipality

The sanitary landfill at Mato da Cruz is a structure for depositing slag and ash coming from the incineration central.

SOLID URBAN WASTE TREATMENT CENTRAL

Situated: São João da Talha - Loures Municipality

The central incinerates wastes from the municipalities of Lisbon, Vila Franca de Xira, Loures and Amadora (circa 660 thousand tons of waste per year) and evaluates the energy of the heat produced, which is translated into the electrical energy production of 300 GWh which is approximately equivalent to 1.5% of the energy produced at a national level.

ORGANIC VALORISATION CENTRAL

Situated: Amadora Municipality

During a first phase, the organic valorisation central will transform into agricultural fertiliser the circa 40 thousand tons per year of organic waste essentially arising from supplying markets, restaurants and canteens.

SCREENING STATION

Situated: Lisbon Municipality

At the screening station, useful waste will be separated according to type, to facilitate and optimise recycling.

At the moment, and up until the previously referred to equipment is functioning, the waste selectively collected by the Lisbon City Council is being distributed in the following manner:

Index of materials Entity
Paper and cardboard Paper warehouse, where paper is separated into batches according to type, before being directed to the paper industry.
Glass Sent directly to the Glass industry through AIVE (Association of the Industrials of Packaging Glass)

Metals, plastics and complex cardboard

Materials at the Vila Fria Screening Station until the VALORSUL Screening Station comes into functioning
Batteries Temporary storage in an appropriate place
