Millennium city, Lisbon has always and during all seasons received a constant migratory stream of people who are attracted by better living and working conditions.
Today approximately 660,000 people live in its 82 km2. To these we have to add the 440,000 who commute daily for professional reasons thus making the user population in the city 1,100,000 people.
Managing the system of solid wastes produced by this population is the responsibility of the Department of Urban Hygiene and Solid Wastes of the Lisbon City Council. Thus, it falls upon it to ensure the cleaning of all public areas in the municipality, to remove and to take domestic waste to its final destination.
