Urban and Environmental Redevelopment

Parque EXPO’s objectives were not only the organisation and realisation of the last World Exposition of the century, which took place in Lisbon from the 22nd of May until the 30th of September, 1998, but also the urban and environmental redevelopment of the area selected for the event which was fundamental for the success of the exposition.

The urban and environmental redevelopment project of the EXPO`98, as an undertaking of enormous dimensions, was looked on as a unique opportunity to apply new concepts with regard to the urban milieu of the future, with special emphasis on the relationship with the environment. The techniques and solutions applied, in conjunction with the integrated environmental strategy idealised by Parque EXPO led to the recovery and improvement of an area which was previously lacking in any environmental value, thereby returning it to the population and to the city.
