It is a public
limited company financed exclusively by government funds
endowed with legal personality, which is
administratively, financially and patrimonially
autonomous (Law 336/98).
The Port of
Lisbon Authority - commonly referred to as APL - is the
body responsible for the management and control of all
activities exerted under its jurisdictional area, in
short. In a broader view it can be considered as the
whole area surrounding the Tagus estuary and all its
adjacent land area (on both banks), between S.
Julião Tower and the old bridge at Vila Franca de
Xira.
APL’s services can be
found alongside its whole area. Besides all its services
supporting port operations, it should be pointed out the
Infante D. Henrique building, at Alcântara, where
most administrative services are centred, as well as the
Junqueira Palace, the headquarters of the Board of
Directors. |
URBEN / PORT INTERVENTION
RE-QUALIFICATION AREAS |
The analysis of the Port of Lisbon
urban dimension leading to the need for an improvement
of the port / city relationship urges a co-existence
between the urban activities (services, leisure and
recreational) and the regular port activities (cargo
handling and other). Bringing together these two goals
– “improvement of the port / city
relationship” and the “increase of the port
competitiveness” – lead to the
re-qualification of areas temporarily non-affected to
the port service and their approach to such uses as
leisure and recreational, commercial and services. There
is, on the other hand the need to endow the port with
good road and rail accesses together with better
operational conditions.
This line of
thought frames one of the major trends of the action
accomplished by APL, namely the area of the “river
waterfront between Algés and Matinha”.
Thus, four
areas have been identified: ALGÉS -
ALCÂNTARA ; ALCÂNTARA - CAIS DO SODRÉ
; CAIS DO SODRÉ -TERREIRO do TRIGO and TERREIRO
do TRIGO - MATINHA.
