Place of great
industrial activity until mid-20th century,
Alcântara keeps the memory of its recent past on
the façades of the old warehouses buildings that
today are part of the City’s architectonic
heritage. The need to open the City to the
River, favouring the contact of the inhabitants with the
Tagus, lead to a dynamic re-qualification development
along the river waterfront, which was carried out in the
past few years. This was expressed in the creation of
public places in direct contact with the water by
managing and re-equipping the existing docks and quays,
as well as the improvement of areas temporarily
non-affected to port operational use. Good accesses were
also developed, while all areas needed to port operation
were safeguarded, namely the rail axle supporting this
port area. |
 |
The Santo Amaro Dock surroundings
were improved (nucleon of restaurants and night-life)
and different collective equipment directly or
indirectly linked to the nautical activity. This was a
two-phased improvement: |
Período em
que se privilegiou a requalificação de
áreas temporariamente não afectas a
actividade portuária.
The areas temporarily
non-affected to port activity were privileged in terms
of re-qualification. It was an unquestionable action due
to its success and impressive mark left in the city,
which has not been followed by the crucial actions at
the level of improvement of road and rail accesses to
the port in terms of strictly port and urban
traffics. |
 |
 |
Re-qualification
and re-affectation developments were pursued in areas
with no port activity. Special emphasis was given to the
improvement of road and rail, as well as pedestrian
accesses to / in the Port of Lisbon, together with the
improvement of the port’s operational
conditions.
In that
sense, and following a wide debate with the Lisbon City
Hall and with every other body with responsibilities in
the field of transport and road infrastructures new
consensual solutions were worked out towards the
creation of new accesses. (e.g. the solution found to
the access to the Alcântara-Cais do Sodré
area, the start of which is scheduled to year 2000. )
